Debunking Common Sleep Training Myths

A mother holding her sleeping baby

When it comes to anything to do with our babies and children there is a LOT of information and misinformation out there. Sleep training is no different. As a mum myself, who has implemented sleep shaping with both of my boys, I was eager to learn as much as possible about what was involved and what to expect. What I found was a world of conflicting advice and opinions.

As a child sleep consultant, here are the most common sleep training myths squashed.

🧚‍♀️ MYTH: Sleep training means all naps need to occur in the cot.

💅🏼 FACT : You don’t need to be trapped in the house all day every day. A well rested baby is an adaptable baby and will be able to sleep on the go, in other people’s houses and even sometimes in a busy restaurant!

🧚‍♀️ MYTH: Sleep training means dropping all night feedings.

💅🏼 FACT: Absolutely not! You can keep the night feeds if your baby still needs them or if you want to keep them. You can also gradually wean night feedings if your goal is for a consolidated full night sleep.

🧚‍♀️ MYTH: Sleep training means leaving your baby to cry-it-out alone.

💅🏼 FACT: You never have to leave your baby to cry alone. I tailor every sleep plan to the family’s parenting style and the baby’s temperament. There are various sleep shaping methods that are highly effective and cry it out can be ruled out.
