Toddler Bedtime Tips

As your baby becomes a toddler with all the feelings and opinions that come along with toddlerhood, bedtime can quickly transform from what was once a simple 30 minute wind down to a battle of wills. As a child sleep consultant, this is one of the most popular topics of conversation I have with my clients who are carers to toddlers.

If you are finding that bedtime has become more struggle and less snuggle, try these tips to keep the peace at bedtime and keep that sleep train chugging along!

✨🌙Create a bedtime routine chart that your toddler can follow along.

These visual routine charts are a game-changer for many families. Little ones often love to fold over each tab themselves and are excited to start the next task. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, you can even get a miniature whiteboard that your toddler can rub off each step as you go along.

✨🌙Introduce fun!

Just like we delay going to bed for scrolling through social media or watching just one more episode, toddlers will also want to put off bedtime in favour of having fun with you! If you bring the fun to bedtime they will want to get involved. Simple things like starting a bathroom conga line, or parents pretending to be a horse for the kiddos to sit on can help to keep things moving.

✨🌙Hold firm on your boundaries.

Toddlers and preschoolers crave routine and boundaries but will also push those boundaries to exert their independence. Holding strong to your boundaries will lead to much more pleasant bedtimes.
